Dick DeVos’ Family and Career Journey

Dick DeVos is Richard DeVos’ eldest son. Richard DeVos co-owns Amway Corporation with Jay Van Andel. The Amway Corporation sells its health, household, and personal care products through network sales. Amway’s dealers recruit second level distributors, who in turn recruit next tier dealers with the final dealers being the customers.

 

DeVos began his career at Amway Corporation in 1974. Here, he held various positions in different company’s departments. In 1984, Amway named DeVos as its Vice President in 18 countries to probably gain extensive experience in international investment. Leveraging his immense knowledge in global-level investments, Dick DeVos left Amway Corporation in 1989 to start a new venture, The Windquest Group.

 

In 1991, Dick DeVos’ father, Richard DeVos acquired the Orlando Magic Basketball and appointed DeVos as its manager. While serving as the director of National Basket Association, Dick DeVos would also manage the operations of the Windquest Group. However, two years later, in 1993, Dick DeVos succeeded his father as Amway’s president. With an extensive experience in management, DeVos initiated the restructuring of Amway Corporation in 2000. As a result, he endorsed the formation of an umbrella firm, the Alticor Corporation. The Alticor Corporation comprises of Quixtar Corporation, Amway Corporation, and the Access Business Group. Under the umbrella company, the Alticor Corporation, Amway expanded its addressable market to over 50 countries and territories in six continents.

 

In 2002, Dick DeVos stepped down as Alticor’s president to concentrate on his private business venture, the Windquest Group, and political causes. With a distinguished track record in business leadership, Dick DeVos decided to contend for the governorship in Michigan State on the Republican ticket. By then, DeVos was considered as the wealthiest Republican to vie for the governorship in the State of Michigan. Although wealth seems instrumental in political campaigns, in DeVos’ case, money proved to be of little help. Unfortunately, Jennifer Granholm, the Republican, won the election by a 14 point margin.

Dick DeVos is married to Elizabeth Prince, a daughter of Edgar Prince. Edgar Prince is the owner and Chief Operating Officer of Prince Corporation of Holland, Michigan. Furthermore, Erick Prince, Elizabeth’s brother, founded the North Carolina-based Blackwater private security firm. Besides, Erick Prince was active in security services in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, DeVos and Elizabeth has four children, Ryan, Rick, Andrea, and Elissa.
