New research shows Wikipedia’s effectiveness and quantifies its cumulative growth

Wikipedia is one of the most reliable websites online, and it is trusted by most of the internet users. Wikipedia’s nature to gather all that unpaid efforts from professionals got the attention of two researchers who studied at the London school of Economics: Stephan Seiler an associate professor of marketing and an economist together with Aleksi Aaltonen an assistant professor of information systems at the Warwick Business School.

They analyzed a total of 1310 articles which were edited for more than 63000 ties in the past eight years. They found out that edits to articles behave like magnets, and they attract other editors. The new Wiki edits attract more edits and so on. This is what makes Wikipedia such an efficient open production process. The two researchers focused on the articles that were not likely to be affected by any of the trending changes, and these were the 1310 Roman Empire articles. They, later on, discovered that when they would regularly edit a Wikipedia article is no longer than 37 characters which are even shorter than a tweet. Aaltonen and Seiler also found that the longer the articles get because of the added up growth effect, the more interesting and better they get.
